A dedicated physician by profession, Isma serves as the Executive in Residence for Graduate Public Health Programs at Hofstra University. Her research interests encompass critical areas in public health, including healthcare infrastructure in developing countries, ethnic barriers to primary care, minority and immigrant health, and healthcare disparities in the United States.

In addition to her academic role, Isma works as a diversity and sensitivity coach, as well as an inclusion and cultural humility consultant for various government and private organizations. Her commitment to fostering understanding and equity in healthcare and community settings is evident in her multifaceted work.

In 2015, Isma made history by being elected as the first female president of the Islamic Center of Long Island in Westbury, New York. After three impactful years of service, she continued to break barriers by becoming the first female chairperson of the Center’s Board of Trustees in 2018.

Isma is also an active advocate for interfaith dialogue, engaging in numerous public speaking appearances and conferences. Her credentials include participation in significant events such as the United Nations conference on Islamophobia, discussions on grassroots models for interfaith engagement, and contributions to the United States Institute of Peace, the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention, and the Network for Religious and Traditional Peacemakers. She has also led initiatives on healthcare and community coalitions at the Engagement Institute.

Her outstanding contributions have earned her recognition on the Long Island Press Power List for six consecutive years (2015-2020), and she was inducted into the LI Press Hall of Fame in 2021. Additionally, she has been honored on the North Hempstead 23rd Annual Women’s Roll of Honor in 2016 and received the "Make a Difference Award" from the Town of Hempstead in 2017. In 2017, she was recognized by the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University for her advocacy work, and CARECEN acknowledged her contributions to immigration advocacy. In 2021, Isma was featured in the City & State Long Island Power 100, and in 2022, she was celebrated as one of the 100 Most Powerful Women of Long Island, New York.
